CORD leader Raila Odinga promised to back William Ruto’s presidential bid should the Kalenjin community support him in next year’s elections.
Raila declared the statement On Sunday at a fundraiser in Sotik, Bomet county amid a deepening political contest over the Rift Valley following a statement by Kiambu Governor William Kabogo that sparked questions as to whether the GEMA communities shall reciprocate Ruto’s bid for presidency as he did in the past for President Kenyatta.
Raila asserted that he and Ruto had no bad blood and that his support for the Deputy President will solely lie on structured talks between the two.8
“We can talk so that I can support the Deputy President in 2022 which he has declared to run for presidency if the Kalenjins support my bid in 2017.”
Raila was accompanied by his close allies including Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo who shed light on a possible ‘betrayal’ by the Mt. Kenya communities citing that Raila and Kalonzo had in the past supported leaders from Central Kenya but, never got the same support during their presidential bids. He went on to say that Ruto should learn from the CORD co-principle’s experience and that the Kalenjins should treat Kabogo’s statement as a wake up call.
The fundraiser was however attended by a handful of Sotik citizens with local MPs and Bomet County Governor Isaac Ruto missing the event.
