Video footage of a police officer being shot by another police officer during a robbery at a Katlehong petrol station has raised questions about the credibility of the SAPS.
In a statement released on Thursday, Captain Kay Makhubela from Gauteng SAPS said there was a manhunt for five heavily-armed suspects believed to be behind the killing of the officer on duty.
Kganyago said the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Deliwe De Lange and Management of the Police in Gauteng were commited to pull together “all necessary resources to ensure that the suspects are caught and brought to book.”
However, the statement is contradicts the video footage which shows another police officer shooting the victim at point blank range.
We attempted to get comment from Makhubela who released the official statement but was referred to someone else.
Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said they were aware of the video footage and the matter is now being investigated by the Hawks.
“We will not be commenting on the matter as it is under investigation by the Hawks,” she said.
The video shows three armed police officers and a man in civilian clothes hiding near a wall and shots are fired towards unseen attackers
One of the police officers moves forward to fire a shot, the other takes a step back and shoots him in the back of his head.
